The Princess of Wales's Traditional Christmas Service of Carols Spotlights Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Yuletide celebration at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The large audience will listen to a mix of carols, music and readings from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Theme of Compassion and Love

The focus of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a tumour, and who established a foundation, a support fund, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the concert.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the former royal to widen access to music lessons.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the organisation, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to hone their artistic talents.

Generations Gathering

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Among the guests will be people from various age groups.

That will encompass young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to collect donations for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.

The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
