The governing board of the iconic performing arts venue has approved a measure to be renamed the Trump-Kennedy Center, per an announcement by the White House.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on social media that the board's decision was unanimous, citing "the extraordinary job President Trump has done over the last year in preserving the building."
"This will be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt attain new levels of prestige and accomplishment," Leavitt continued.
The proposed move is likely to prove deeply divisive, especially in Washington, D.C., where the center has been an iconic landmark since its construction and original naming for President John F. Kennedy.

Soon after taking office, President Donald Trump fired all the center's existing board members and named supporters in their place. The freshly appointed board subsequently voted to elect Trump chairman.
